The average BT business line rental cost has risen by at least 5.5 per cent from the start of August.

BT business customers had to face a significant increase in the cost of their line rentals.

This increase took effect from Friday (1 August 2014), the move saw the current rate rise by an average of 5.5 per cent, while the prices of some of the telecoms giant’s broadband packages and products will also change in the near future. The company has written to all of its business users – representing almost two in three small and medium-sized enterprises across the UK – warning them of the impending hike.

However, BT business plans could incur the wrath of industry regulator Ofcom, which introduced new regulations earlier this year in a bid to protect smaller firms against mid-contract price rises.

Under the guidance, any company taking out a new land line, broadband or mobile contract should be allowed to cancel it without incurring a financial penalty if the monthly subscription price agreed at point of sale is increased by the provider.

The planned hike comes after BT business announced a before-tax profit of just over £2.8 billion for the 2013-14 financial year, representing an upturn of six per cent on the previous 12 months.
